Service 4WD? The Transfer Case Control Module
A Service 4WD message names a system, not a part. On an electronically shifted transfer case there are at least four things in that chain — the dash selector, the control module, the shift motor on the transfer case, and the position signal the module reads back — and the truck cannot tell you which one let go. This is what the transfer case control module actually does, and how to work out whether yours is the problem before you buy one.
What the module actually does
Its job is in the name the manufacturers give it. GM's parts catalog calls it "MODULE, Transfer Case Shift Control". Ford calls it "Module - Transfer Shift Control", under basic number 7E453. It is the computer that sits between the buttons on your dash and the transfer case under the truck.
That job only exists because the transfer case is shifted electrically. On an electronic-shift system the driver selects a mode from the dash rather than pulling a lever, and, as the general description of these systems puts it, "this system has a transfer case motor". The module takes your selection, commands that motor, and then watches a position signal to confirm the transfer case ended up where it was told to go. When the confirmation does not come back, the truck sets a fault and tells you to service the 4WD system.

Knowing the number on your own module matters more here than the year and model do, and the next two sections are why.
Read the code before you buy the module
The fault codes for this system are worth knowing because of what they name. The generic chassis-code list includes a family called Transfer Case Contact Plate "A" through "D" Encoder Circuit Failure — C1499 through C1502. An encoder circuit code is pointing at the position-sensing side of the transfer case, not at the module that reads it.
Two cautions, in order of how much money they save you:
- Chassis codes in the C1000–C3000 range are manufacturer-specific. The published generic list says so itself: these codes "may not match the ones listed here." Read the code your truck actually stored against service data for your vehicle, not against a generic table.
- You need a scan tool that reads chassis and body modules. A code reader that only pulls engine P-codes will show you nothing here, and a truck with a 4WD fault and no engine codes reads as "no codes" on the wrong tool.
The practical order is: confirm the code, check the shift motor and the position signal it reports, check the selector switch and the connectors, and only then look at the module. A module that is correctly reporting a fault somewhere else in the chain is not a broken module.
The part number problem — GM turned eight numbers into one
If you are on a 2007–2014 GM truck, your original module is very likely one of a set GM has since consolidated. The current GM service number, 24261367, is listed in the dealer catalog as replacing 24243084, 24249095, 24242480, 24240487, 24252878, 24241970, 24243085 and 24241143. A separate 2007 chain runs 24239928 → 24243086.
That is good news and a trap at the same time. Good news, because a used module carrying one of those older numbers is not automatically the wrong part. A trap, because "it supersedes" does not mean "it drops in."
Plan on programming
Here is the detail most listings leave out, and it is written into GM's own catalog name for the part. The catalog entry for 24239928 does not read "transfer case shift control module" — it reads "Module Assembly, Transfer Case Shift Control (W/O Calibration)". W/O Calibration means the module ships without the software configuration for a specific vehicle.
Our own interchange rule for this family says the same thing from the other direction: GM transfer case control modules within one transfer-case family supersede each other and are reflashed to the VIN. So whichever number you end up with — new, remanufactured or a tested used one — budget for a shop or dealer to program it to your truck, and ask before you buy rather than after.
It is not universal, even inside this one part type, which is why we put it on each part rather than in a blanket statement. Read that line on the part you are actually buying; do not take a rule of thumb from an article, including this one.

Which one you need
Two rules, and they are the ones we use ourselves when we decide whether two of these are the same part:
- Match the number off your own module first. Supersession runs one way — the newer number covers the older ones, not the reverse — so start from what is actually bolted to your truck.
- The transfer case matters, not just the truck. Calibration follows the transfer case type and the way 4WD is selected. A push-button setup and an automatic setup are different calibration groups even when the connector is identical, so a module that plugs in is not automatically a module that works.

One Ford wrinkle worth knowing
On older Fords, 4x4 shift logic lived inside the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) rather than in a module of its own. From 2001, Rangers moved that job out to a separate transfer case control module. My GM part number is not the one you list — is it still the right part?

older to newer, so start from the number on your own module.
Will any module that plugs in work?

My 2002 Ranger will not shift into 4x4 — is that the GEM?
