Adding a Factory Trailer Brake Controller to Your F-150
If your 2009–2014 F-150 didn't come with the factory trailer brake controller, the wiring is almost certainly already there — behind the blank coin pocket in the center of the dash. The OEM module plugs straight into it. The part nobody mentions: it won't work until the trailer-brake feature is switched on in the truck's body control module.
Is my F-150 already wired for a trailer brake controller?
On these trucks the harness is present whether or not the tow package was ordered. Pop out the blank coin tray in the center of the dash and the factory connector is sitting right behind it, along with the mounting points the module snaps into. No under-dash box, no splicing, no tapping into the brake circuit.
That is why a factory controller looks like it belongs once it's in — because it does. Same opening, same connector, same bracket the trucks that were ordered with the option use. This is a retrofit only in the paperwork sense; physically it is an install into a spot Ford already left for it.
Why doesn't the module work when I plug it in?
Because the truck doesn't know it's there yet. Plugging the module in is the easy half. The trailer-brake feature has to be switched on in the body control module before the truck will recognize it — a configuration change, not a repair, and nothing is wrong with the part while it sits there doing nothing.
This is the step that makes people think they bought a dead module. In our shop it is the single most common reason one of these comes back, and it is why we say it before the sale rather than after: the module goes in, the dash shows nothing, and the assumption is the part. It is a laptop with FORScan, or about ten minutes at any shop with a capable scan tool. Which module do I need — 9L34, AL34 or BL34?
This is where the money gets wasted. The modules look identical in a photo, they mount in the same hole, and they do not carry across model years. The prefix on the label is the only reliable check — not the shape, not the connector, not the photo in the listing.
- 2011–2014 F-150 — BL34-2C006. Note the range: the video says 2011–2012, and that is short by two model years.
- 2009–2010 F-150 — two prefixes turn up on these trucks: 9L34-2C006 and AL34-2C006.
If you are replacing a module already in the truck, match the number printed on the one you pull out. If you are retrofitting from scratch and there is nothing to read, send us the year and trim before you buy and we will confirm which one your truck takes. That is a five-minute check that saves a return.
Is the factory controller better than an aftermarket one?
Different, and for most owners better. It is proportional, it is integrated into the dash where the rest of the truck's controls already are, and there is no box hanging under the steering column waiting to catch a knee. It reads as stock, which matters when the truck is sold.
The trade-off is the configuration step. An aftermarket controller works as soon as it is wired in; the factory one needs the truck told about it first. If you are not willing to run the configuration or pay a shop for ten minutes, an aftermarket unit is the more honest choice for you — we would rather say that than sell you a module that ends up in a drawer.
Which F-150s does this fit?
2009–2014 Ford F-150. That is the span these two part-number families cover between them: 9L34 and AL34 on the 2009–2010 trucks, BL34 on 2011–2014.
It does not carry beyond the F-150. Expedition and Super Duty use different trailer brake modules with different part numbers — we stock those separately — so a module pulled from an Expedition is not a cheaper way into an F-150.
