Common questions

What kind of car audio parts are these?

Factory-integrated OEM head units, receivers, amplifiers, and infotainment or display units — the same equipment that came in the vehicle. Because they're factory parts, they keep working with the steering-wheel controls, chimes, and vehicle data that an aftermarket unit would drop.

What are the symptoms of a failing factory radio or infotainment unit?

No power, no sound, a blank or flickering display, media faults, distorted audio, or the loss of features like the backup camera or Bluetooth. Some anti-theft-linked radios lock up and display a code request after a battery disconnect.

Will a factory radio work if I just plug it in?

Sometimes. Many radios are plug-and-play when the OEM part number matches, but navigation and infotainment units — and radios tied to the vehicle's anti-theft system — often need coding or a VIN/anti-theft relearn. Message us your VIN and the part number on your radio and we'll tell you what yours needs.

Why buy an OEM factory radio instead of an aftermarket unit?

An OEM unit keeps your steering-wheel controls, chimes, and vehicle integration working, and it fits the dash opening exactly. Aftermarket head units lose factory features and need adapters and trim kits. Every OEM audio unit we sell is inspected and tested for functionality before listing.

Will a used factory radio work in my car after installation?

Depends on the vehicle and the radio. Factory radios fall into two broad categories:

  • Older or simpler units — install, power up, and they work. These were common through the early 2000s on most platforms.
  • Modern VIN-locked units — programmed to a specific vehicle's VIN at the factory. If the radio loses power (battery disconnect, dead battery) or is installed in a different vehicle, it locks. The screen displays "LOCKED" or "THEFTLOCK" and all functions disable. Unlocking requires programming with a scan tool that has the right software for the platform.

Most factory radios from roughly the late 2000s onward have some form of anti-theft locking tied to the VIN. The listing for each unit specifies whether programming will be required after installation. If you're not sure, send your VIN — Hubes will tell you straight.

How do I unlock a factory radio that says LOCKED or THEFTLOCK?

Depends on the radio's age and lock type:

  • Older customer-code systems (some 1990s and early 2000s GM Delco units, certain Ford and Chrysler radios) use a customer-set or factory backup code entered through the radio's own buttons. The procedure is in the owner's manual or on the radio's anti-theft card. Some manufacturers will provide a backup code to verified owners.
  • VIN-locked systems (most modern factory radios) require programming with a manufacturer scan tool or J2534-compatible programmer. There's no customer-enterable code. The radio has to be programmed to your vehicle's VIN by a dealer or an independent shop with the right tools.

If you bought a factory radio from us and it locked after installation, the listing description specifies whether the unit can be programmed and what's required. If you're stuck, message Hubes — we can usually point you in the right direction.

What's the condition of used car audio components?

Used factory audio components ship in the condition shown in the listing photos. Every unit is sourced from a documented vehicle, inspected at intake for cosmetic condition, and tested for functionality where applicable.

What gets caught at intake and pulled from inventory:

  • Cracked screens or housings
  • Dead displays or non-responsive controls
  • Speakers with blown drivers or damaged surrounds
  • Amplifiers that won't power up or fail communication checks on the vehicle network

What you might see in listing photos:

  • Light surface scuffing on faceplates
  • Minor scratches on screens consistent with normal use

See Parts, condition & testing for the Grade A — Tested standard.

Are factory audio components interchangeable across model years?

Sometimes within a generation, but factory audio is one of the categories where small revisions matter. Manufacturers update audio architectures frequently — adding USB ports, Bluetooth, navigation, or larger displays — and even radios that look similar can have different connectors, different software, or different network protocols.

The part number is the deciding factor. Compare your old unit's part number to the OEM Part Number on the listing. If they don't match exactly, send your VIN.

See Fitment & vehicle compatibility for the full process.

What years and makes do you carry car audio for?

Coverage varies as inventory turns. Hubes Hub stocks factory audio components — radios, amplifiers, speakers, control heads — across most domestic and major import platforms. The live listing on the Car Audio collection shows what's in stock right now.

If you don't see your vehicle, send your VIN and what you're replacing. Hubes can tell you whether something fitting your build is coming through the bay.
