What does a clock spring do?
The clock spring (also called a spiral cable) is a coiled ribbon of wiring behind the steering wheel. It keeps a continuous electrical connection to the driver's airbag, horn, cruise control, and steering-wheel buttons while the wheel turns left and right. It's a known wear item because that ribbon flexes every time you steer.
What are the symptoms of a bad clock spring?
An airbag or SRS warning light is the most common sign, along with a horn, cruise control, or steering-wheel buttons that stop working. Some clock springs make a clicking or grinding noise as you turn the wheel. Because it's part of the airbag circuit, an SRS light shouldn't be ignored.
How do I get the right clock spring for my vehicle?
Match the OEM part number — clock springs vary by the steering-wheel features your vehicle has, like audio controls, a heated wheel, or adaptive cruise. Send us your VIN if the number isn't readable and we'll confirm. On install, the clock spring has to be centered/timed to the steering, or it can fail again.
